Austrian Heatmap

As part of the European Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU) , all member states had to develop a “comprehensive assessment of the potential for the use of highly efficient CHP and efficient district heating and district cooling supply” in the respective country. The Vienna University of Technology and ecofys were commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy to carry out this assessment for Austria. The maintenance and hosting of the homepage and in particular the interactive map is carried out by e-think.

First, the current heating and cooling requirements of all consumption sectors (households, services and industry) were regionally located and scenarios for future development were determined. This heating and cooling requirement was then compared with a possible supply of heating and cooling from CHP systems (combined heat and power), industrial waste heat and renewable energy sources. From this, a technical potential was first determined using technological limitations. The economic potential was then estimated by means of a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the various technically viable options.

The results of the work are available on this page as a final report , data downloads and in the form of an interactive map . The textual alternative version of the content shown in the interactive map can be found in the final report.
